According to the Mayo Clinic, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after you experience or witness a traumatic event. PTSD symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety. You may also feel isolated and numb. While everyone experiences some of these symptoms after a traumatic event, if they persist for more than a month and interfere with your daily life, you may have PTSD.
There are several warning signs that can indicate you are struggling with PTSD. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is important to reach out for help:
• Recurring memories or nightmares about the traumatic event
• Flashbacks or intrusive thoughts about the event
• Extreme reactions such as panic attacks when reminded of the trauma
• Avoiding anything that reminds you of the trauma • Feeling emotionally numb • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating • Constant feelings of anxiety or guilt
