It is a common misconception that vitamin D3 only helps with bone health. In fact, vitamin D3 also helps hair growth. A study published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology showed that when participants were given vitamin D3 supplements, they had an increase in hair growth. The study found that there was an improvement in the thickness and quality of the participant's hair after taking the supplements for eight weeks.
Another study published in PLOS One showed similar results; participants who supplemented with vitamin D3 for 12 weeks saw an increase in hair growth as well as thicker and stronger hair shafts. Vitamin D3 plays a role in cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis – all of which are important processes for healthy hair growth.
While more research is needed to determine whether or not vitamin D deficiency contributes to poor hair health, it seems clear that supplementing with this nutrient can help improve overall scalp health and promote new hair growth
