Are probiotics good for Vagunal health?

There is a lot of buzz around probiotics and their potential benefits for vaginal health. But do they actually work? The answer is complicated.

First, it’s important to understand what probiotics are. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that line the gut and support digestive health. They can be found in some foods, like yogurt, or taken as supplements. Some research suggests that probiotics may help with issues like diarrhea, constipation, IBS, yeast infections, and even eczema and allergies.

When it comes to vaginally-related issues though, the research is still inconclusive. A small number of studies have shown that taking probiotic supplements can help treat bacterial vaginosis (BV), a common infection caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina . However other studies have not found any benefit from using probiotics for BV or other vaginal problems . So at this point there isn’t enough evidence to say definitely whether or not probiotics are helpful for vaginal health issues.

If you’re considering trying a probiotic supplement to improve your vaginal health symptoms, first speak with your healthcare provider to see if it’s right for you – she may have specific recommendations based on your individual situation. And keep in mind that while taking a pro-biotic might offer some relief from certain symptoms. It's also important to address any underlying causes of these problems whenever possible.
